Russian military personnel recently uncovered a sophisticated sabotage attempt after discovering hidden explosives in a shipment of FPV drone goggles intended for operators on the frontlines.
The modified Skyzone Cobra goggles, which arrived through courier service SDEK disguised as humanitarian aid from China, contained approximately 10-15 grams of plastic explosives carefully positioned near the temple areas of the headsets. While the explosive quantity was relatively small, its strategic placement could have resulted in severe injuries or death when detonated.
The plot was discovered after Russian troops noticed signs of tampering on the packages, prompting a detailed inspection that revealed the concealed explosive devices. The sabotage method bears similarities to a previous attack targeting Hezbollah, where doctored pagers exploded simultaneously across Lebanon and Syria, resulting in 12 fatalities and thousands of injuries.
The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's military supply chains through covert operations. Russian authorities have initiated an investigation to trace the origin of the sabotage and identify the responsible parties.
This attempted attack specifically targeted drone operators, who play an increasingly central role in modern warfare through their operation of FPV (first-person view) drones for reconnaissance and combat missions.
