A series of mysterious drone sightings over three US Air Force bases in East Anglia has raised concerns about potential foreign intelligence gathering operations, according to a former UK defense expert.
Nick Pope, who previously investigated UFO incidents for Britain's Ministry of Defence, suggests the drone activities spotted between November 20-22, 2023, at RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell could be linked to Russian or Chinese intelligence efforts.
The timing of these incidents has drawn particular attention, as they coincided with preparations at RAF Lakenheath for what US Department of Defense documents describe as an "upcoming nuclear mission."
"These drone operations likely represent intelligence gathering by foreign adversaries, particularly Russia or China," Pope told The Guardian. He noted that while direct involvement of foreign intelligence officers was improbable, the operations may be conducted through third parties.
The Ministry of Defence has responded to these security concerns, implementing counter-drone measures at defense sites. However, specific details about these protective systems remain classified for security reasons.
British authorities are treating these incidents as potential criminal activities. Lord Coaker addressed the matter in Parliament, confirming that investigations are focused on identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the unauthorized drone flights.
These recent sightings add to the region's history of unusual aerial activity near military installations, including the well-known 1980 Rendlesham Forest incident. However, the current situation's connection to nuclear mission preparations makes these events particularly noteworthy.
While investigations continue, military officials maintain heightened security measures at all affected bases, demonstrating the seriousness with which these potential threats are being treated.
